What to do with Old Blankets

While blankets are amazing at providing comfort, keeping us warm, or adding a pop of color to our decorating, blankets, like anything else can get worn out. When this happens, they lose some of their amazing qualities. However, a blanket can always serve a purpose. Here are 10 things to do with old blankets to give them a new purpose.

Donate Them

Can you donate blankets?

One question we get asked a lot is can you donate blankets? The answer is yes and I'm going to tell you exactly where to donate bedding and old blankets.

Where to donate old blankets

Homeless shelters- Homeless shelters are always looking for donations. Blankets are especially helpful. Contact your local shelter to find out more information about how to donate.

Charitable organizations- GoodWill, The Salvation Army, and Deseret Industries are great organizations to donate your old blankets.

Animal Shelters- Animal shelters are always in need of blankets. Many shelters will give a blanket to each animal to use as a bed while they look for a loving home.

Churches- Local churches also accept blanket donations and will find a place where your old blankets will be greatly appreciated.

Give it to your Pet

You can repurpose your old blankets by using them as beds for your pets! Animals love our Minky Couture blankets almost as much as you do. Especially dogs! To learn more about why dogs sleep under blankets see our blog post Why Do Dogs Sleep Under Blankets.

Make a Blanket Fort

Use your old blankets to make a blanket fort. Blanket forts are a great way to entertain kids and allow them to grow their imagination. This doesn’t just apply to kids. Adults can have a blast building blanket forts too! Check out our blog post Fun Blanket Fort Ideas to Make With Your Kids for some ideas.

Make a Door Snake

You can also use your old blankets to create your own draft stopper or door snake. Simply roll your blanket up and put it under your door to keep wind and bugs from coming in.

Make Pillows

Blankets can also be repurposed into pillows! Whether you use your blanket as pillow stuffing or sew your blanket into throw pillows, blankets are a great way to create fun and soft pillows for sleeping or decoration.

Make a Bag

Creating your own bag is another great way to turn your old blankets into something new and fun! All you need is a needle and some thread. Simply fold the blanket in half and use your thread and needle to sew the two sides together.

Make a Scarf

Old blankets also make for great warm scarves. Just cut up your old blanket into scarf size strips and you’ll have your very own scarf. Or you can save yourself some trouble and buy your very own Minky Couture scarf

Make Cleaning Rags

You can cut your old blankets up to make clearing rags. While it may not be as fashionable as a scarf, it is just as useful.

Put them in your Emergency Kit/Travel Kit

You can also put old blankets in your emergency kits or store them in your car. In the case of an emergency, your old blanket will keep you warm and still offer you comfort.
